Spring Awakening: Common Pests Emerging in March

Writer: Aardvark Pest Control IncAardvark Pest Control Inc

As winter fades and temperatures begin to rise, many pests that were dormant or less active during the colder months start to re-emerge. March marks the beginning of increased pest activity, making it the perfect time for homeowners to be proactive in pest prevention. Here are some of the most common pests that become active in early spring and how you can keep them from invading your home.

1. Ants

Warmer temperatures signal ants to leave their underground nests in search of food and water. You may start noticing them in kitchens, pantries, or even marching across your driveway. Some of the most common ant species to watch for include:

  • Carpenter ants – Known for damaging wood structures.

  • Odorous house ants – Small black ants that emit a foul smell when crushed.

  • Pavement ants – Often found near sidewalks and driveways but can enter homes.

Prevention Tips: Keep food sealed and countertops clean. Eliminate moisture sources around your home. Seal cracks and entry points along doors and windows.

2. Termites

March is the start of termite swarming season, especially in regions with mild or humid climates. Winged termites (also known as swarmers) emerge to start new colonies, which means potential infestations are on the horizon. If you spot these flying insects near your home, it could be an early sign of a termite problem.

Prevention Tips: Schedule a professional termite inspection. Keep firewood and mulch away from the foundation of your home. Fix leaks to prevent moisture buildup, which attracts termites.

3. Mosquitoes

As temperatures rise and spring rains create standing water, mosquito populations begin to increase. These pests aren’t just a nuisance—they can also carry diseases like West Nile virus and Zika virus.

Prevention Tips: Remove standing water from birdbaths, gutters, and flowerpots. Keep grass and shrubs trimmed to reduce mosquito resting spots. Consider using mosquito repellents and installing outdoor fans to keep them away.

4. Rodents

While rats and mice are a problem year-round, spring is when they become more active outdoors and start breeding. If they find easy access to food or shelter, they may decide to settle inside your home.

Prevention Tips: Store food in sealed containers and clean up crumbs. Check for gaps around doors, vents, and pipes, and seal them. Trim tree branches away from your home to prevent easy access.

Be Proactive This Spring

March is a critical time to take action against pests before infestations become full-blown problems. By taking preventive measures now, you can enjoy a pest-free home as the seasons change.

If you suspect a pest issue or want to take proactive steps, consider scheduling a professional inspection to safeguard your home.
